26-1-2012.

Today the third group to present their work. Members of their group is Nurul Shuhadah, Nur Rabiatul Adawiyah, Noor Hadayu and Nurizan Naseha. We present and explain about DETERMINERS AND SIMPLE PAST TENSE. Miss Zu also help me to explain a little bit about determiners and simple past tense. Determiners are focus to used to measure uncountable nouns. Other than that, Determiners are used to show quantity. While, Simple past tense are focus about used to describe an action or an event which occurred at a specific time in the past.

What is DETERMINERS??

žOther than the articles a, an, and the, there are other word
that can be used to show quantity.
Determiners are used in front of nouns to indicate whether you are referring to something specific or something of a particular type.
Determiners are different to pronouns in that a determiner is always followed by a noun. Therefore personal pronouns ( you he , etc.) and possessive pronouns (mine, yours, his, etc.) cannot be determiners.
The definite and indefinite articles a/an/the are all determiners.
You use a specific determiner when people know exactly which thing(s) or person/people you are talking about.
The specific determiners are:
the definite article : the
demonstratives : this, that, these, those
possessives : my, your, his, her, its, our, their
For example:-
"The dog barked at the boy."
"These apples are rotten."
"Their bus was late."
You use general determiners to talk about people or things without saying exactly who or what they are.
The general determiners are:
the indefinite articles : a, an
a few
a little
all
another
any
both
each
either
enough
every

many

most
much

neither

What is simple past tense??
The simple past tense is used to describe an action or an event which occurred at a specific time in the past.
Example: I bought a new computer last week.

an action done in the past tense(last week)

The past simple is used:
to talk about completed actions in the past:
My brother got a new job in Madrid last week.
What did he say when you told him?
Shakespeare died in 1616.
to talk about habits in the past:
We always had roast beef on Sundays when I was a boy.
We never went abroad for our holidays until the 1970s.
I travelled by bus until I passed my driving test.
to talk about events that happened one after the other:
He jumped out of bed, ran into the bathroom and slammed the door.
I came, I saw, I conquered.

 Past simple and past continuous
As far as Spanish speakers are concerned, the main thing that you should remember is that you have more verb tenses in Spanish than we have in English.
trabajé
I worked
trabajaba
-----
estaba trabajando
I was working
estuve trabajando
-----
Even though it might sound strange to you, you need to use the correct English tense according to the rules. Look at the following examples which could help:
When we arrived she made some tea. (One action followed another)
When we arrived she was making some tea. (She was in the middle of making it)

I painted the living room yesterday. (I finished it)
I was painting the living room yesterday, (I did part of it)

He drowned. (He's dead)
He was drowning. (I jumped in and saved him)

He hit his brother. (Single action)
He was hitting his brother. (Repeated activity)

The old pub stood by the river near the bridge. (Permanent)
He was standing outside the pub waiting for it to open. (Temporary)
